ForwardX Robotics is a Beijing-headquartered Robotics company, and has marketing efforts based in San Jose, California.[1][2][3] It is best known as an autonomous luggage maker, [4]was founded by Nicolas Chee in 2016. [5]ForwardX Robotics has raised $10 million in a new round of funding. [6]Besides its best known self-driving product - Ovis (originally known as CX-1), ForwardX also has embedded its ‘self-driving’ technology into a factory flatbed truck that is being used in some of the warehouses. [7] [8]It is aiming to explore the creation of mobility machines for last-mile deliveries. [5]

History:

Founded by former Oracle executive Nicholas Chee in late 2016 in Beijing, China.[5][9]Raised $1 million from angel investors, and $10 million from Series A round co-led by CDH Venture and Eastern Bell Venture Capital. Both rounds bring the company’s total venture funding to $11 million USD. [1][10][11]The company debuted its first product - auto-follow robotic suitcase, CX-1 (now named as ‘Ovis’) - at the CES Unveiled preview show in 2018. [8][12]At CES, the suitcase could only follow a person from behind. Since then, the company has improved functionality so the suitcase can follow its owner side-by-side, the company markets the function as ‘side-follow’, when it was launched four months later on Indiegogo. [13]Ovis may be a first step for ForwardX Robotics toward a broader portfolio of autonomous vehicles, [1]but won’t be the only tech the company will be unpacking. [3]The startup already provides a self-driving factory flatbed truck currently in use at some warehouses in China. [7]The company is exploring the creation of mobility machines for last-mile deliveries, case in point, the kind Marble uses for restaurant deliveries and Starship Technologies uses on corporate and university campuses. [6]
